WYLD Trial Advocacy Program

The Trial Advocacy Program (TAP) offers members of the WYLD an opportunity to improve their litigation skills, in both the civil and criminal justice fields, and acquire trial experience. The TAP provides a unique opportunity to interact with and learn from more experienced practitioners, and to network with other young lawyers. The TAP is an intensive two-weekend program emphasizing jury trials, and includes lectures, discussion groups, mock trials, exercises, and general education and instruction in courtroom trial practice.

The TAP will take place over two weekends on October 24-25 and November 15-16, 2008.  Click here to download a registration form.

WYLD Trial Advocacy Program Seeks Volunteer Jurors for Annual Mock Trial

The WYLD Trial Advocacy Program is recruiting young lawyers and law students to act as jury members in the mock trials on Saturday November 15th from 8:00 am–4:00 pm.  This is an excellent opportunity to become acquainted with a "live" courtroom setting, observe a trial from a juror's perspective, and to listen as the judges comment on what works and what doesn't during trial. This experience is of great educational value for law students and young lawyers. To volunteer as a Mock Trial Juror or for questions about the Trial Advocacy Program, e-mail jennyr@wsba.org.  To download an information flyer, please click here.

WSBA Leadership Institute

Many young lawyers, particularly women, those of color, and those from traditionally under-represented groups, have not been recruited for leadership positions or made aware of opportunities for skill development, professional growth, and leadership training available through the WSBA. In response, the WSBA Board of Governors decided in 2004, at the behest of President Ron Ward (WLI founder), to create a leadership development program for a select group of young lawyers, and the WSBA Leadership Institute was born.

The mission of the WSBA Leadership Institute is to recruit, train, and retain Washington attorneys who have been admitted to practice for three to 10 years for leadership positions in the legal community and in the WSBA. Program participants ("fellows") will be selected with an emphasis on diversity (racial, ethnic, gender, sexual orientation, disability, cultural, and geographic).  An additional benefit of this program will be expansion of leadership potential for local, minority, and specialty bar associations. Although diversity is the emphasis, no one will be excluded from consideration if they have been admitted to practice for three to 10 years and timely submit a completed application.  To learn more about the WLI or to download a 2009  application, click here.
