While the shortfall in legal services delivery capacity is the most critical challenge facing the ATJ network, many believe that rapidly emerging information technology offers unprecedented opportunities for higher quality services at lower cost. The panel will examine that premise and suggest future directions.

Guest Speaker: Chief Justice Barbara Durham
Supreme Court of Washington

Chief Justice Barbara Durham became the first woman Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Washington in January 1995. Together with Attorney General Christine Gregoire, Durham convened a Domestic Violence Summit to explore ways to protect victims. She was also selected 1995 Judge of the Year by both the King County Bar Association and the King County Washington Women Lawyers. Durham has served on numerous Judicial Boards and Commissions including the Commission on Washington Courts and the Code of Judicial Conduct Task Force. She is currently the chair of the Board for Judicial Administration.

Howard H. Dana, Jr. has been an Associate Justice of the Maine Supreme Court since 1993. He is a member of the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Legal Aid and Indigent Defendants and a former member of the Board of Directors of the Legal Services Corporation (1982, 1990-93). He presently serves as liaison to the Court’s Advisory Committee on Professional Responsibility, its Alternative Dispute Resolution Planning and Implementation Committee, and its Mediation Committee. He also serves on the Judicial Council and the Justice Action Group.
