What is Emeritus membership?

Emeritus is a membership status which creates a limited license for attorneys otherwise retired from the practice of law to practice on a volunteer basis for an approved legal services provider. A list of approved legal services providers is included in the application packet.

Is there an application fee?

The fee for attorneys not admitted in Washington is $235. The payment is to be submitted with the completed application. There is no application fee for Washington attorneys. However, all Emeritus attorneys must pay the annual inactive membership fee.

If I am in Emeritus status for more than three years, will I have to re-take the bar exam?

No, for Washington attorneys, practicing in Emeritus status is considered active legal experience. Non-Washington attorneys wishing to become active Washington attorneys must take and pass the bar exam.

Will I be required to comply with CLE requirements?

No. Emeritus members are not required to obtain CLE credits.

Is there any type of training required?

Can I obtain Emeritus status before I find a provider to work for?

No. The application must be certified by an employer that you presently are or will be employed as a volunteer exclusively as a lawyer in that office and will provide legal services for no fee.
