Position-available listings may also be posted to the Job Center without being published in Bar News. The cost is the same as placing a classified ad in Bar News. Bar News monthly publication deadline is the first of each month for the issue following, e.g. April 1 for the May issue. No cancellations after deadline.

Please note that state and federal law allow minimum qualifying experience, but prohibit maximum qualifying experience. This means that while we can print minimum years of experience (e.g., "2 years' experience"), we cannot print ranges (e.g., "5-10 years' experience).

What are the benefits of posting a job to the Job Center?

To reach a maximum number of qualified candidates, "Positions available" ads are posted:

  • in the print edition of the Bar News, which is mailed to every active attorney licensed to practice in the state of Washington and more

  • on the WSBA website Job Center, viewed by hundreds of Washington state attorneys every week

When, how often, and where are jobs posted to the Job Center?

As much as possible, we post new job listings every Friday afternoon. Rarely, there are no new listings and less rarely technical problems cause delays.

When you check the job center for new listings, remember to use your browser's "refresh button" (usually the f5 key on a PC) to ensure that the browser shows you the latest version of the page.

What does "AV rated" mean in a job ad?

The term "AV Rated" is not related to the Washington State Bar Association.  According to http://www.martindale.com/company/ratings.html, "AV Rated" is a term used in a rating system by Martindale-Hubbell, an attorney directory of long standing. According to that site, Martindale-Hubbell rates private attorneys:

"... on average 5 years after first admission to the Bar and active practice (10 years in the larger cities). ... Presently 43% of the private practice bar in the US have Martindale-Hubbell ratings; the rated universe includes approximately 3% CV ® ratings, 21% BV ® ratings, 20% AV ® ratings."

"Legal Ability Ratings are:
C Good to High. A CV ® Rating is an excellent first rating for lawyers. The typical recipient has a reputation for hard work and high ethical standards.

B High to Very High. A BV ® Rating is an indication of an exemplary reputation and well-established practice habits. A typical lawyer is in mid career, with a significant client base and high professional standing.

A Very High to Preeminent. An AV ® Rating signifies that the lawyer has reached the heights of professional excellence. He or she has usually practiced law for a number of years, and is recognized for the highest levels of skill and integrity."

Again, these ratings have nothing to do with the Washington State Bar Association; the above information is provided as a public service.
