"Proud to Be a Lawyer"
Week of April 12, 2004
Randy Gordon, 8th District Governor
Twenty-five years, one month, and twenty-five days ago, I was sworn in as a new attorney. I wrote something which I taped to my desk and which I have not shared with anyone publicly before. I hope you will honor me by repeating them with me today.
"As I begin my work this day, I ask for myself the moral sense to recognize injustice, the strength to oppose it wherever it may be, the calm to know how this may best be done, the patience to permit of orderly remedies where they exist, the imagination to create them where they do not, the tenacity and energy to see the work completed, the right to the serenity which accompanies a job well done."
~Commencement Address to the Graduating Class of Seattle University School of Law, December 20, 2003
