Born on October 16, 1898, William O. Douglas served in World War I and returned home to begin a legal career. 

After being appointed to the United States Supreme Court, he served longer than anyone else in history (April 17, 1939-November 12, 1975). 

A prominent naturalist, world traveler, and author, Douglas wrote seventeen books, including many on nature and conservation. He frequently resided in rural Washington State.
