June 1999
Opportunity for Service: ABA House of Delegates
Deadline: Wednesday, June 23, 1999
Three positions are available on the American Bar Association House of Delegates (including one Young Lawyer delegate).
The control and administration of the ABA is vested in the House of Delegates, the policymaking body of the ABA . The House, which has approximately 500 delegates, elects the ABA Officers and Board, and meets out-of-state twice a year. Delegate attendance is required. The WSBA's allowance is $250 per year per delegate. Members appointed to the House of Delegates serve two-year terms. Incumbents may be reappointed, but must reapply.
Members interested in this appointment should submit a letter of interest and résumé to: Executive Director, WSBA, 2101 Fourth Avenue , 4th Floor, Seattle , WA 98121-2330 ; e-mail: oed@wsba.org.
What Is Your E-mail Address?
In 1999, for the first time, the WSBA license renewal form included a space for members to provide an e-mail address as part of their contact information. We had calculated that e-mail was a low-overhead method of contact and represented a convenience for members and the public. So we were surprised that only 15 percent of our members provided an e-mail address — especially since the "Raising the Bar" survey results so far indicate that up to 60 percent of our members have e-mail addresses. Additionally, since late 1998 the WSBA CLE department has been requesting e-mail addresses on registration forms with a note that unless the member indicated otherwise, the e-mail address would be entered in the member's file. To date, no one has objected.
The WSBA treats business e-mail addresses exactly the same as other business contact information we collect. That means that e-mail addresses will be printed in Resources and included in the lawyer search database online. E-mail addresses on contact lists will be made available only to the WSBA, its sections and committees, and other bar associations and law-related entities. When implementing this policy, the Board of Governors also decided to fully restrict the availability of fax numbers on contact lists, since fax contact entails significant overhead for the recipient.
We invite your comments at oed@wsba.org. If you would simply like to add your e-mail address to your member file, contact the WSBA Service Center at 800-945-WSBA or 206-443-WSBA or e-mail questions@wsba.org.
