Free Technical Stuff!

by Randall E. Winn

Why pay for what you can get free?

For those times that you just can't sit in front of a computer anymore, here's a list of free-and-useful magazines that you can use to keep up to date with computer technology. They'll also dress up your waiting room, silently impressing your clients with the genuineness of your interest in technology. You just can't do that with a website anymore.

Be warned: since they're free, they have lots of ads, and some articles tend toward gee-whizzery. But skimming them can warn you of trends, e.g. you could have learned about the upcoming Year 2000 fiasco years before the ABA Journal. So give these a try, and remember to recycle!

Information Week: A glossy magazine, sort of like Newsweek for corporate computer types. E-mail iwk@halidata.com, visit http://www.informationweek.com/, or call 1-800-292-3642.

Datamation: Sort of like U.S. News & World Reports for corporate computer types. Subscribe through their website: http://www.datamation.com/.

Intellectual Property Worldwide: Put out by the same people that publish The National Law Journal. Of special interest for Intellectual Property people, but also good for intimidating the unwary. E-mail: IpwWinfo@Ljx.Com.

Puget Sound Computer User: A tabloid packed with ads and useful articles. Do not buy a PC without looking at this! Get it at bus stops & coffeehouses.

Fabrik's E-Mail Netiquette Guide: Not a periodical, but worth having. E-mail Netiquette@fabrik.com.
