Washington State Bar Association Adds William D. Hyslop to Board of Governors
Seattle, Washington, October 17, 2000 — The Washington State Bar Association is pleased to announce the addition of Spokane lawyer William D. Hyslop to its Board of Governors. His three-year term began on October 1.
A Spokane native, Mr. Hyslop has practiced law for over 20 years, and is a principal in the firm of Lukins & Annis PS. He is also a former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington. Mr. Hyslop is the immediate past-president of the Spokane County Bar Association, a former co-chair of the Equal Justice Coalition, and was chair of the recent WSBA Bar Leaders Conference. He is active in civic activities, having served as co-chair of Citizens for Spokane Schools and as a former president of the Washington State University Alumni Association.
The governance of the WSBA is vested in the 11-person Board of Governors elected by the members. There are three governors from the seventh congressional district, and one from each of the other eight districts. The Board meets regularly (every six weeks) at various locations around the state, and its meetings are open to the public. Much of the work of the Bar is carried out through its 28 standing committees; 22 sections; and a Young Lawyers Division, with its many committees.
The Washington State Bar Association is a private, non-profit organization authorized by the Washington State Supreme Court to license the state's 26,000 lawyers. The WSBA both regulates lawyers under the authority of the Court and serves its members as a professional association — all without public funding. As a regulatory agency, it administers the bar exam, provides record-keeping and licensing functions, and administers the lawyer discipline program. As a professional association, the WSBA provides continuing legal education for attorneys, in addition to numerous other educational and member-service activities.
