"Bridging the Gap by Building a Bridge Between Youth and the Law"
Seattle, Washington, May 11, 2001 — The 10th Annual Youth and Law Forum will be held Saturday, May 19, 2001 from 8:30 a.m. to noon, at Condon Hall on the University of Washington Seattle campus. The forum is open to students aged 12-18 and their parents or guardians. There is no cost to participants, and a continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Volunteer lawyers, judges and law enforcement officers will present information on such topics as basic legal rights and responsibilities, driving privileges, and students' rights. There will also be a special session for parents and guardians about parent-child communication. Speakers include Seattle City Attorney Mark Sidran, Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske, King County Sheriff Dave Reichert, and King County Prosecutor Norm Maleng.
This event is sponsored by Seattle First A.M.E. Church, the Young Lawyers Division of the Washington State Bar Association (WSBA), the Loren Miller Bar Association, University of Washington School of Law, and Bullivant Houser Bailey PC.
The Washington State Bar Association is a private, nonprofit organization authorized by the Washington Supreme Court to license the state's 26,500 lawyers. Any active member of the WSBA is also a member of the Young Lawyers Division until December 31 of the year in which he turns 36, or December 31 of the fifth year in which he has been admitted to practice, whichever is later. The WSBA both regulates lawyers under the authority of the Court and serves its members as a professional association — all without public funding. As a regulatory agency, it administers the bar exam, provides record-keeping and licensing functions, and administers the lawyer discipline program. As a professional association, the WSBA provides continuing legal education for attorneys, in addition to numerous other educational and member service activities.
