Spokane Attorney Robert H. Lamp Receives WSBA Professionalism Award

Seattle, Washington, September 21, 2005 — The Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) announced today that Seattle attorney Robert H. Lamp received the WSBA's Professionalism Award for his professionalism in the practice of law, his pursuit of a learned profession in the spirit of service to the public, and his sharing of values with other members of the profession. Mr. Lamp received the award at the WSBA's Annual Awards Dinner held September 15 at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle.

Mr. Lamp graduated from Washington State University with a degree in economics and received his law degree from the University of Washington School of Law. After service in the Army, where he earned the rank of captain, he was employed by the Office of the Code Reviser, and then was an assistant attorney general for Washington from 1967 to 1971. Shortly afterward, he joined the law firm of Witherspoon, Kelley, Davenport & Toole, where he still practices today in the areas of estate planning, probate, probate litigation, agricultural law, and real estate.

Throughout his career, Mr. Lamp has been actively involved in community, charitable, and professional associations. He has been a member of the WSBA's Law Examiners Committee since 1992, a former chairman of both the Catholic Foundation and Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Spokane and a member of the Spokane Estate Planning Council.

Mr. Lamp's dedication to his clients and his willingness to mentor other attorneys have made a lasting impact on the residents and legal community of Spokane. In nominating him for the award, Davenport attorney L. R. "Rusty" McGuire wrote, "Without question, he is to me the epitome of the old-style professional attorney…. There is no doubt in my mind that this award should go to Bob not only for what he has done for the Bar Association and his various community activities, but also for what he has done for countless attorneys as a mentor, as a friend, and as a colleague."

About the WSBA
The Washington State Bar Association is an instrumentality of the state exercising a governmental function authorized by the Washington State Supreme Court to license the state's 29,200 lawyers. The WSBA both regulates lawyers under the authority of the Court and serves its members as a professional association ¯ all without public funding.

As a regulatory agency, it administers the bar admission process, including the bar exam; provides record-keeping and licensing functions; and administers the lawyer-discipline system. As a professional association, the WSBA provides continuing legal education for attorneys, in addition to numerous other educational and member-service activities.

The governance of the WSBA is vested in its 14-person Board of Governors. There are three governors from the seventh congressional district; one from each of the other eight districts; and three at-large members, one of whom represents the Young Lawyers Division. The 2005-2006 president is S. Brooke Taylor, of Port Angeles, and the 2005-2006 president-elect is Ellen Conedera Dial, of Seattle.

The board meets regularly (every six weeks) at various locations around the state, and its meetings are open to the public. Much of the work of the Bar is carried out through 23 standing committees; 24 sections; and a Young Lawyers Division, with its many committees.
