Council on Public Legal Education Partners

Many organizations contribute personnel time, funding and/or other resources to the Council on Public Legal Education.

The Washington State Bar Association provides an administrative home to the Council by hosting its meetings and employing a Public Legal Education Manager who coordinates the Council's activities.

The Administrative Office of the Courts donates several hours a week of staff time from its Education Department.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Paul G. Allen Charitable Foundation and the University of Washington are partnering with the Council to create a gateway public legal education website by providing funding or in kind contributions.

The Washington Judges Foundation, the Family Policy Council, the Greater Pierce County Community Network, Seattle University School of Law, the National Youth Court Center, and the Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention have supported the Council's efforts to expand the number of youth courts in the state through funding or in-kind contributions.

The Washington Judges Foundation has provided funding to purchase Street Law textbooks for many high school classrooms in the state, and supplied judicial volunteers to serve as co-teachers. 

The Council is a member of the Washington State Council on Social Studies, at whose conferences Council members have offered numerous law and citizenship education workshops for teachers.

In fall 2000, the University of Washington co-sponsored with the Council "Reinventing Democratic Life," a professional development conference for teachers.

The Washington State Legislature and Supreme Court co-sponsor the Council's bi-annual "Law School for Legislators" workshop.

In addition to the above, a large number of public and private organizations donate the time of those who serve on the Council and/or its many committees. These organizations include:

  • Courts: Washington State Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, Administrative Office of the Courts, Office of Administrative Hearings, many local courts
  • Educational institutions: Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and local school districts, University of Washington, Seattle University, Gonzaga University, Western Washington University, Spokane Falls Community College
  • Governmental agencies: Washington State Office of the Attorney General, Washington State Employment Security Division
  • Law firms, legal service providers and advocacy organizations: Columbia Legal Services, Northwest Justice Project, American Civil Liberties Union, Cairncross and Hempelmann, Foster Pepper & Shefelman, Theiler Douglas Drachler & McKee
  • Businesses: Puget Sound Business Journal, Avista Corporation
