Health Law Section

The Health Law Section furthers the knowledge of the members of the Section and the Washington State Bar Association in the areas of law involving both federal and local health care. The Section focuses on the business of health care, state and federal reform, fraud and abuse, antitrust, new modes of health care delivery, insurance issues, and many other concerns. The Section works to contribute to valuable relationships among health law practitioners and opportunities to develop health law practices.

The Section provides benefits to members by developing regular educational opportunities, including CLE seminars and notices of important developments in health law; contributing to valuable relationships among health law practitioners and opportunities to develop health law practices; and providing general information relating to healthcare law. The Section also promotes list-serve discussions and social networking opportunities.

Health Law Conference Scholarship

The WSBA Health Law Section (HLS) awards two (2) scholarships per year of up to $1,250 each for recipients to attend health law conferences.

Scholarship funds may be used by recipients to attend conferences put on by the following organizations:

  • American Health Law Association (AHLA)
  • American Bar Association (ABA)
  • Health Care Compliance Association (HCCA)
  • Other conferences may be proposed by the applicant.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be one of the following:

  1. A current J.D. or L.L.M. student in a Washington state law school; OR
  2. An attorney who has been practicing for three (3) years or less and is a current member of the WSBA, and who is
    • Not currently employed;
    • Employed in the public sector;
    • Employed by a non-profit organization;
    • Employed by a Native or Indigenous tribe; or
    • Employed by an organization that does not reimburse attorneys for continuing legal education.

 

Application Instructions

To apply, please send the following information to wsbahealthlawsection@gmail.com no later than May 31, 2024.

  1. Name
  2. How you meet the eligibility requirements (e.g. student; employed by a non-profit organization)
  3. Name of the law school and year in law school, if applicable
  4. Employer, if applicable
  5. If awarded a scholarship, which conference you would like to attend (name, date, and location)
  6. A statement of approximately 500 words or fewer about your interest in health law and why you would like to attend the proposed conference.

Applications will be collected until May 31, 2024.

Additional Information

The HLS Executive Committee can provide guidance about conference selection. If you would like help choosing a conference, please send an email to wsbahealthlawsection@gmail.com.

Successful applicants will receive scholarship funds in advance of the conference the recipient plans to attend. Scholarship funds may be used for conference registration, travel, lodging, and other expenses directly related to conference attendance. The amount of funds dispersed will depend on whether the recipient will attend the conference in person or virtually and whether out-of-state travel is required. Appropriate verification of costs must be provided upon request. Recipients may be asked to share about their experience with the Executive Committee after attending their conference of choice.
