Legislative Committees

Information about and links the the WSBA's Board of Governors Legislative Committee and the WSBA Legislative Review Committee.

The WSBA's Legislative Office works closely with the following two distinct, internal legislative committees to further the mission of the Bar Association:   

Board of Governors Legislative Committee

Board of Governors Legislative Committee (BLC), an 11-member committee comprised of Board members, meets weekly by conference call just prior to and throughout the legislative session. The BLC’s primary purpose is to consider legislation of interest to the WSBA and to provide the WSBA Legislative Affairs Manager with guidance, as needed. Typically, legislation reviewed by the BLC is brought to the committee’s attention by the WSBA’s Legislative Affairs Manager. The BLC is authorized to, after consideration of GR12 and subject to the procedural requirements of the WSBA Bylaws, take a position on legislation on behalf of the WSBA.

WSBA Legislative Review Committee

The WSBA Legislative Review Committee, a 16-member standing body, meets multiple times during the fall months. Its primary purpose is to ensure that WSBA-request legislation meets GR12 and is vetted both internally and externally. WSBA-request legislation typically emanates from a WSBA section. The committee may also consider non-WSBA proposals submitted to the committee for the purpose of seeking WSBA input and support. If the committee votes to recommend approval of a WSBA-request bill, or support a non-WSBA proposed bill, the proposal is submitted to the Board of Governors in November for formal approval or support. WSBA-request bills approved by the Board are introduced in the upcoming legislative session.
