Immigration Legal Assistance Small Grants for Nonprofit Organizations
The Washington State Bar Association initiated the Immigration Legal Assistance Small Grant Program for Nonprofit Organizations to advance the Bar’s mission and purposes outlined in General Rule 12.2. The program is designed to support nonprofit organizations working to assist former clients of Alexandra Lozano. Grant funds are intended to cover needs like food and rental space for advice clinics, copying costs for materials or printouts, and nominal stipends for volunteers. By alleviating logistical and financial barriers, the grant is intended to enable organizations to focus on delivering valuable legal support.
What the Grants Fund
- Grant amount: $2,500 per organization.
- Eligible Uses: Operational needs such as food, space, supplies, copying, nominal stipends for volunteers or other needs identified by organizations.
- The grants will be disbursed on a rolling basis (there is no deadline) to all those who meet the criteria as long as funds are available.
Grant Eligibility
- Applicants must be a nonprofit organization who serves low-income people.
- Assistance must serve immigrants who are former clients of Alexandra Lozano in Washington State who are low-income and have limited means to pay for legal services.
- Any legal advice must be delivered by an attorney licensed to practice immigration law and/or licensed to practice in Washington state.
- Organizations must demonstrate a track record of organizing legal clinics or similar community service events for immigrant communities.
- Applicants must have the capacity to manage grant funds responsibly and report on their use.
Selection Process
- Application Submission: Interested organizations must submit a completed application form, including a description of planned use of the grant funds and a budget for grant use.
- Review: Applications will be reviewed for completeness, eligibility, and alignment with grant objectives.
- Notification: Selected applicants will receive a grant notification letter outlining the grant terms and reporting requirements.
Grant Terms
- Grant funds must be used for assisting former Lozano clients who are low-income and who have limited means to pay for legal services.
- Any legal advice given to clients must be given by an attorney licensed in Washington state.
- Any grant funds that are used for stipends for volunteers must be a nominal amount.
- Grantees are required to submit a very brief report detailing any outputs and outcomes.
- Any proposed changes to the planned use of funds must be communicated to and approved by WSBA in advance.
